Best Sleep Mask in 2025: Total Darkness Without the Discomfort

A good sleep mask is one of the cheapest, most effective sleep interventions available. A bad sleep mask is something you take off at 2am because it’s pressing on your eyelids and making your face hot.

I’ve tested six different masks and the quality range is enormous.

What to Look For

Zero light leakage. This is the only job that matters. The mask needs to block light from above the nose bridge, at the sides, and underneath. Most fail at the nose bridge — light bleeds in at the bottom of the mask where it meets your face.

No eye pressure. Flat masks that press directly on your eyelids disrupt REM sleep by preventing natural eye movement. Contoured or 3D masks create a cavity that keeps fabric off your eyes entirely.

Breathable fabric. A mask that traps heat against your face will wake you up. Silk and bamboo are the best materials — cool, smooth, and gentle on skin.

Secure but not tight. The strap needs to stay in place through the night without cutting into your head or slipping off when you roll over.

The 6 Masks I Tested

1. Manta Sleep Mask — Best Overall

The Manta solves the eye pressure problem with modular cup inserts that create a complete blackout cavity. Zero pressure on eyelids. Zero light leakage. Adjustable eye cups that fit different face shapes. At $35 it’s the best-designed mask I’ve tested and the one I’ve used nightly for over a year.

2. Alaska Bear Silk Sleep Mask — Best Budget

Pure mulberry silk, naturally cooling, gentle on skin. At $10-12 it dramatically outperforms its price. The downside: it’s a flat mask that can press lightly on eyes. For side sleepers or light-sensitive people, upgrade to the Manta. For everyone else, this is exceptional value.

3. Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask — Overpriced Mediocrity

At $25 you’d expect premium performance. The light blocking is adequate but the foam material traps heat and the strap loosens throughout the night. Skip it.

4. Sleep Crown Over-Face Pillow — Gimmick

A pillow you place over your face. Theoretically cozy. In practice it’s too hot, slides off, and doesn’t block light consistently. Not recommended.

5. Nidra Deep Rest Mask — Budget 3D Option

A contoured mask at $10 that keeps fabric off the eyes. Light leakage around the nose is its main weakness. Good for occasional use or travel but the Manta is worth the extra $25 for nightly use.

6. Bucky 40 Blinks — Decent Travel Option

Lightweight, compact, and comfortable for short periods. Better than nothing for planes and hotels. Not good enough for serious nightly use.

My Pick

For nightly use: Manta Sleep Mask, ~$35. The modular design, zero eye pressure, and complete blackout make it the clear winner.

For budget: Alaska Bear Silk, ~$12. Exceptional value. Use it, test whether total darkness improves your sleep, then upgrade to the Manta if it does.

Combine a good sleep mask with blackout curtains for belt-and-suspenders darkness. The redundancy is worth it.
