What Makes a Curtain Actually Block Light

True blackout requires two things: a fabric that blocks light transmission and a hanging method that eliminates gaps at the sides, top, and between panels.

Most “blackout” curtains fail on the second requirement. The curtain rod sits inside the window frame, leaving gaps at the top and sides where light bleeds in. The solution is extending your curtain rod significantly wider than the window frame and mounting it close to the ceiling — eliminating the side gaps entirely.

What to Look For

Triple-weave or thermal blackout fabric. This is the construction method that actually blocks light. Single-layer “blackout” fabric often blocks 85-90% of light — not enough for a truly dark room.

Floor to ceiling length. Order curtains longer than your window. Light enters from below if curtains stop at the windowsill.

Wide rod coverage. Your rod should extend at least 6-8 inches past the window frame on each side.
