Now the question is: traditional Finnish sauna or infrared sauna — and which is worth buying for home use?
Traditional vs Infrared — The Real Difference
Traditional saunas heat the air to 80-100°C (176-212°F), which then heats your body through convection and conduction. Core body temperature rises significantly. Profuse sweating occurs. The cardiovascular response — increased heart rate, vasodilation, cardiac output — closely mimics moderate aerobic exercise.
Infrared saunas operate at much lower air temperatures (45-60°C / 113-140°F) and use infrared radiation to heat your body directly rather than heating the air. The experience is more comfortable and less intensely hot. Sweating still occurs but the cardiovascular response is generally less intense than traditional sauna.
Which Has Better Evidence?
Traditional sauna. The Finnish mortality studies, cardiovascular research, and most robust outcome data used traditional Finnish saunas. Infrared sauna research exists and is growing but the evidence base is significantly smaller.
That said, infrared sauna produces real benefits — improved circulation, heat shock protein production, relaxation, and detoxification through sweat. If the only sauna you’ll actually use consistently is an infrared one because it’s more comfortable and accessible, it’s better than no sauna.
